Don't be hard on yourself when your workout routine changes

You workout to give yourself love.
You workout to have some alone time.
You workout to practice loving your Beautiful Body.
You workout to sculpt, tighten and tone...To build muscle and see results.

But what happens when your workout schedule changes and your exercise flow is disrupted? When your routine begins to change, does your energy shift?... When you miss your favorite class, not once, but twice, and then three times... do you feel your bod' begin to change? Does how you see yourself begin to shift? Can you keep instilling loving thoughts to your Beautiful Body, or do you start on the negatory, feeling like everything you've worked for is literally going downhill?

This is a crucial crossroads we may find ourselves at one time or another in life, and along the path of attaining a regular workout schedule. Where there was self-praise, growing confidence and a growing ember of self love, can come self-criticism and perhaps, a shift back into bad habits and self loathing.

Because your workout routine may have slipped for a week or two, or three, or even four!!!... You may have decided to loosen up your diet too. Where you had crafted the skill to say NO to certain foods, and only have them as rewards or on special occasions, you are now indulging regularly and feeling the change this causes in your physical, mental and emotional bodies too.

Stop the Hate

Recently my workout schedule completely changed. If it wasn't one thing, it was another. First I got a cold- not a heavy duty flu or anything, just the sniffles and that crappy feeling that drained my energy completely for a whole week. Just as I was feeling better and ready to embark on getting back to my workout routine, my period came. Now, I can't stop teaching Body Sculpt Classes just because I get the sniffles or have my monthly visitor, so I was at least doing my classes a couple times a week. And just because I get my period doesn't generally mean I stop working out altogether- though I will allow myself a couple down days to relax and eat whatever I desire! All of this said; once in a blue 'moon' I will get atrocious cramps and super low energy during my cycle. This round was exactly that. So I sucked it up and just rolled with it- feeling bloated, emotional and grumpy. Ughhh- Week two of no working out.

As my period ended, I began to see the light, becoming excited once again to get back into my routine- feeling my body begin to loose it's tightness, I couldn't wait to get back into my Callanetics, and 'after class extra workout regimen' at the gym. As I was getting prepared to get back into my flow, my lower back went out. Arghhhh!!! I was so upset! "Okay Universe, what are you trying to tell me?" I became so annoyed with my body. "Why is this happening to me?" I screamed. Walking to work I had to hold my posture just so, to take the pressure off my lower back. My face contorted with grief as other areas of my body compensated for the pain I felt. I had to wear a heat patch while instructing and couldn't wait to get home and cry.

Distorted Vision
I got home with my aching back and took a shower. Making my way to bed I glanced at my body in the mirror. Three weeks of not working out has surely taken its toll, I thought to myself. I had got back into the habit of  bombarding my mind and body with negative thinking and got into a lazy habit of talking down to myself. With all of this down talk, I was sure what to expect looking back at me in the mirror- a haggard, bloated lady. As I looked in the mirror I saw cellulite and all the usual suspects I expect to see- looking back at me. (Isn't it true, we automatically see the parts of ourselves we have learned to hate or think are not perfect- instead of praising ourselves for learning to love ourselves more, and for all the work we have poured into maintaining a routine.) Yep, my negative self talk is confirmed.. I thought to myself. I scowled at my reflection and only saw the 'ugly' parts of myself. Missing out on my workouts has left my body gross and dare I say it... 'fat'. I thought to myself.

But just then something happened. I could not surrender to entertaining so much self hate, after all of the hard work I have done to get healthy, happy and love my body just the way it is. After all- this IS what I preach and teach. So now I get to walk the talk. I turned back to the mirror and like a fog that slowly faded, I saw through layers of self loathing... Yes my body felt and appeared 'softer',  but no I had not 'lost' all the hard work I had clocked up over the past couple years, at all. I allowed my eyes to gaze over a wider expanse of my body- beyond the usual suspects of cellulite and loose skin around my chunky juicy inner thighs. While I used to be obsessed with weighing myself, I do my best not to get caught in that trap. That said, I hit the scales and saw I had gained five pounds- gasp! That said- I noticed my butt did not sink back to my ankles and the general tone of my muscles was still present through my skin. Sure, my tummy had softened a bit- but for all of my negative thinking and feeling, I was still in good shape. I let myself off the hook, crawled into bed and lay my hands upon my lower back to help its healing process.

Switch Your Thinking
One final week of not working out, and I'm feeling even worse about my body. But it's another trap! I realized how much I identify with my body... and not always in the healthiest ways. I am not my body!!! We, all of us are sooo much more than just a physical form! 'Knowing' this on a spiritual level I still find myself feeling like; "If it (my body) looks and feels tight, I am happy", "If it looks and feels soft, I am sad." Whoa- what an amazing realization to make. How can I be so identified with this one dimension of myself? I prayed "Let me remember that I am more than my body and be grateful for its perfect health.." (even though I was healing my back, had gone through a cold and a 'crampy' period- I opted for the light!). I had to turn my thinking around and focus on the positive instead of the negative. The body hears everything you think and say about it, and responds accordingly. Tell yourself you are ugly and sick, and your cels will begin to believe it- and make that the reality. Tell yourself you are healthy and beautiful, and your cels will begin to respond in amazing ways. I had to go back in time and erase an almost months worth of debilitating statements I had recited over and over unto myself and replace them with love <3

Love is the Answer
It's so easy to be hard on ourselves, when what we need is more love, more patience and allowance to go through whatever the body/mind/emotions> 'LIFE' needs to traverse. As I have come out the other end, and am getting back into my workout routine, I now see many aspects of my life were changing over that month of 'set backs'. (1) I am leaving a job I have had for nearly ten years, (2) I have been letting go of many limiting beliefs in other areas of my life, and (3) I am talking wedding dates with my fiance... Woop!

We forget that as we shift our thinking, jobs, and relationships, our internal landscape shifts too. My body was reflecting all of the changes I was setting up in my life. As yours most likely would too. It is okay to allow time and space, patience and grace with your body and life. I love my life and I love my Beautiful Body. Remember when you are going through major transitions and your workout routine changes- be patient with yourself and keep choosing love over negative self talk. Love is like a muscle, we get to exercise it just as much as we do our crunches and squats! Now that I am getting back on a roll, I see the time I had to reflect and be still is serving a much larger pattern in my life. I had to slow down on many levels so that things could speed up and take off in wonderful ways!

Choose Love, Choose Love, Choose Love, even if you forget and slip back into old patterns, you can always come back to Choosing Love.

Blessings,
Tuesday

You Are a Self Fulfulling Prophesy

Are you unhappy because you talk too much about how unhappy you are? (this is not a trick question) Are you unmotivated because you affirm how lazy and tired you are all the time? Do you feel overweight, unhappy in your body-shape, or unhealthy in general- because you are on autopilot of repeating the story about how you just CAN'T do anything to change?

On the phone with a dear friend and she tells me her story- "Yeah, you know, I'm 20 or so pounds overweight. Don't feel so good in my clothes, but can't find the motivation to exercise.. I mean, I just can't. By the time I brush my teeth and get downstairs in the morning... I just end up eating a bag of chips- and thats what happens every time."

A relative who performs very little physical exercise told me she fixed her bicycle, with the intention to exercise regularly. She bought a cycling helmet, cycling shorts and a water bottle, but at the end of the day could not get on the bike. Her story went like this; "It's too cold to cycle in the morning. It's too hot in the afternoon. Once I've eaten lunch, I am too full to exercise. My foot started hurting, so I don't think I should exercise. Now I don' fit into the cycling shorts I bought, so I'm not as excited to cycle."
~
I remember taking a Yoga Inversion Workshop in 2003, where the focus was on headstand practice.  In the past I would coyly exit class for the restroom to hide whenever my teacher would propose such craziness. But once I became a yoga teacher, I knew I had to conquer my fears and go into the ring of fire- so to speak. The teacher I received my certification with told me it wasn't as important for me to be able to 'do' a headstand, as much as it was for me to guide my students safely through it. This allowed me to feel confident teaching the pose, even if I couldn't perform it quite yet.

After teaching yoga for a year, I wanted to hone in and face my fears. I thought I was afraid to go upside down because I was sure I would fail, or crack my neck, or look stupid, besides the fact I dove into the shallow end of a pool, bumped my head and got a concussion when I was a kid. What I came to realize at the workshop was; I had some deep seated fears to work out in my mind and body. The real fear being- I was really afraid of dredging up feelings of abandonment, and of not feeling supported as a child. How does this connect with headstand you ask? Well, for me, each time I went up into headstand, I wanted someone to be there to catch me if I fell- and would have to relive the feelings of no-one being there for me... like when I was a kid. There was so much hurt inside of me, I didn't want to relive it. I had to come to terms with the fears of my inner child. The fears I felt went deeper than worrying about looking stupid.

During headstand- my most dreaded pose at the time, the workshop teacher came over and guided me through the 'set-up'. Scared, I came out of the pose before getting into it- stating my story (what I repeated often when it came to confronting this pose). I said; "Theres no point, I'm never gonna get up into a headstand.. and if I do, I will loose my balance, fall over and hurt someone, or hurt myself. I need someone there to support me." He became quiet and with a straight face said; "Know you are a self fulfilling prophesy." My eyes widened, my ego felt hurt, and I wanted to walk out. Just then he continued "But that can change, if you change your story." Whoaaa!!! He blew my mind. From that day on, I realized in order to allow a new experience into my yoga practice, I had to change my mind- literally- my words had to create a reality where a new possibility could emerge. It also became apparent that learning to welcome the changes I proposed for my body was important too.

It's deep. I encourage you to go down the rabbit hole of your own resistance, and you may just find a dark corner awaiting a spring cleaning and purging of the past so it may be filled with light, love and a new means of expression.

Over the years, I learned how to perform a headstand with confidence - and that meant I had to get over all my self loathing about it. I also had to get over feeling like no-one was there for me as a child and learn to love myself in the NOW, instead of walking wounded from the PAST. It meant I had to applaud myself at overcoming a long held fear- and applaud others too. It meant I had to be successful and shine. Are you afraid of being successful? Fearful of meeting the childhood you, and all the fear and hurt within that part of you? Are you resistant to feeling what true self confidence feels like? Can you humbly exude power in new ways that make you feel good, happy and strong in your body, mind and life?

Our words limit us, or liberate us. They create the stories we believe about our lives. Our stories create the blueprint we either expand or contract through. What is your current story regarding your body/physical health/exercise routine? Do you hear yourself saying; "My body just does not want to get up and move. I have no motivation to be healthy. You see- here I am on the couch procrastinating again. I hate my body. I don't have enough money to get better/be well." Or, do you say " I'm gonna do my best to meet some new goals, like do some yoga every week, or walk a mile a couple times a week- or just love myself a little more. Yeah, I'm gonna stop buying chips so they are not a distraction from starting my workout routine at home."

What is your current story regarding your work situation? Do you hear yourself saying " I am so grateful for all of the amazing opportunities and possibilities that are here/that await me." Or "I can't stand the people I work with, they annoy me to death. I hate my job, it sucks. I will never get a good job. People my age never get hired anymore."

What is your current story regarding your current relationship? Do you hear yourself saying; "I knew I would end up being betrayed again.. See I told you so- I knew it. I'll never find someone special. I am so insecure." Or, "I am so ready for a new experience in my next relationship. One I feel loved and respected in. Yes- that is what will happen. I expect the best- and deserve it!"

We state our story and have a lot of past experiences to back up the theory's of self too, saying "You see- I told you so".... Why do we limit ourselves? It's not necessarily because we are lazy, procrastinators, or our foot hurts. It's because when we change one thing, it affects everything else- and it is linked to the past, overcoming it- healing it and making peace with it. Can you allow yourself to succeed in new and exciting ways? Why not consider shifting the story of limitation, laziness and illness - into beauty, strength and empowerment? Can you be and feel empowered by your words, by your story?

Maybe we are in a situation in life, by which if changed would mean a lot of other things in our life would have to change, including how much love we allow in and we give out. Bottom line is this is all about self love. It's not about doing the perfect headstand, loosing twenty pounds or wining a cycling marathon. It's about choosing love over fear. What if fear is what kept us anchored to the past, while love catapulted us into an amazing future of possibilities?

Changing your mind, and changing your story-  requires letting go of the old story of self, specifically the parts that are afraid, inhibit your growth and personal power. The new you is cool, is patient and will let the old you take them back to the even older you (the child you) so that you can prove why (the now) you are so afraid to allow change to occur. It is here you will understand what is seeking healing and closure. Ultimately, if you let it- the new you can take the old you by the hand and show you some amazing stuff about yourself. Yes they will take you outside your comfort zone and show you how to trust the new words and ways you speak over your life- if you let them.. And your life will forever be changed.

What is your story for today?.. Let me know in the comment section below!

Ready For Change - Part 2; Doing 'the Work' with Affirmations

My last post entitled Ready for Change, Part 1- 'The Work'- Putting Pen to Paper went pretty deep. If you are willing to do this kind of 'work', you will find out a lot about yourself. It's like a form of meditation. Only once our attention is focused do we begin to sense and tap into a broader expanse of our environment. We can begin to see that there are possibilities outside of what things seemingly 'look' like to us at this time.

I know it takes time to sit, and write, and feel out your deepest truths, that is why it is called 'the work'. It can be easy to spend time watching the t.v, or talking on the phone, or feeling sad for yourself... but consider spending a portion of your time devoted to self improvement, self love and self empowerment, with exercises such as in the previous post. You are not doing this work for anyone else but yourself. It is personal and private. Consider discovering your feelings and growth as very sacred steps along your path to greater SELF- LOVE.

Lets review this statement from last weeks post:

"If you are not experiencing the results you want in life, change the way you do things. Change the way you talk about things, and change the way you think about things."

The "Take Charge of Your Vision- Create the List" exercises are a helpful way to navigate creating the change you wish to be and see in your life.

A student this week said she was finally shaping up in her body and was feeling good about herself physically, but inside, her emotional state was a mess and her outer life didn't match her deepest wishes and hopes. Affirmations help to bridge the gaps between body, mind and emotions so we can feel the inside better capable of matching the outside and vice versa.

I have found regular use of Affirmations to be a deeply powerful means to re-wire my mind and mouth from speaking and thinking in negatives, to thinking and speaking in positives! I like to use index cards for my affirmations and put them up all over the house, especially in front of my bathroom mirror- try it.

An Affirmation is a statement or thought pattern we habitually say or think over and over. We may find ourselves stuck in the Affirmations of "There is no hope.", "I am doomed.", "I always fail.", " Why bother, my life sucks anyway." Know that your words and thoughts create your reality and truth. What you speak into and think into your life becomes real. How do we know? Well, look around yourself. Do your thoughts and speech match your reality? What are your usual thoughts, are they reflected back to you in your environment and through those that surround you?

I know, it may seem a bit foolish to 'think' positive thoughts and 'speak' positively when your life feels like it is a mess and you feel like a mess too. But believe me- if you can allow yourself to do the work consistently, the work, works! Just give a try.. and I mean REALLY MUSTER UP YOUR SINCEREST INTENTION TO CREATE POSITIVE CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE, AND BE READY TO RECOGNIZE AND RECEIVE IT. Mmmmmhmmmmm. Can I get a 'Whooo Whoooo'
from the back row!!

When doing this kind of 'work'- you become the nutty professor, the alchemist and a master of your time and space. Once you realize your thoughts and words are running the show of life, you will truly want to re-write the things you normally think and speak into the world about yourself. I will say, it takes work. The 'old you' that is used to the old ways you used to think or speak may not wish to give up the old ways of thinking. Thats ok, its a process, be gentle, kind and loving with your self, always. <3. Its like learning a new language, it may take time before the new, powerful words and thoughts you are now entertaining can actually take root and become automatic.

After doing the exercises in last weeks post, I came up with some very meaningful affirmations for myself. I would like to share a few with you.

(1) Change the way you do things.
List five simple things you can do to create more positivity and love in your life.
Sometimes I feel impatient, and forget about the blessings in my life. I use affirmations to help myself remember the basic foundation I intend my life to expand from.
Here is one of my affirmations from this exercise:

(2) Change the way you talk about things.
List the things you talk about and how you can do so in a more positive manner.
I am always complaining to my body, and to my boyfriend about my loose skin. After countless bouts of gaining and loosing weight, I find it harder to tighten up trouble areas and often get down on my body for not 'looking' a certain way. After doing the above written exercise, I decided I would no longer speak of my loose or sagging skin, and I would do my best not to focus on it in my thoughts either.
Instead I am affirming via mind and speech, the body I intend to have! It feels great speaking it into the world, I can tell my body feels more supported than before too. It's like it has been waiting for me to be nice to it, so it can start to change. As long as I held it in the reality of looking loose skinned and sagging- thats all I saw. I swear, in just a week I am beginning to see a different body shine through- it is magic. Change your mind and change your circumstances, for real! Your body is alive and hears everything you say and think, and reacts to is accordingly.

(3) Change the way you think about things.
List the top five 'negative', or limiting thoughts you have about your self or life. 'Flip the script' and write your thoughts in a changed manner. Transform them into positives.
Omg- I was in a little car accident earlier this year. My spine got out of whack and I experienced a lot of pain for what felt like- forever. I had to totally stop exercising and slowly build up my work-outs again. I am finally able to do things I just could not do for several months... Yet I still hear myself speak of 'my spine being out of alignment', or of my 'weak back' to friends etc. Not anymore- Nope, I am choosing to speak strength and well-being over my body and empower it to be its best NOW!

You are a warrior.
Be disciplined like one.
Have integrity in how you speak over your life.
Your words control your mind and co-create your life.

Next week we will get into working out and later I plan to share some yummy veggie recipes with you too! You are asking for tummy, butt, inner thigh exercises, so that is where we will continue next time. Until then, visit my website www.tuesdaymaythomas.com and check out my music and books- and Keep loving your Beautiful Body. Be gentle with yourself along the path of transformation.
Much Love and Light. <3

Ready for Change, Part 1- 'The Work'- Putting Pen to Paper.

"What are your results? see the patterns that don't serve. be disciplined and get control of your mind. love yourself and don't beat yourself up."- Psalm Isadora

-'Word', Sister.-

Change

You can choose it- and cause it to choose you back. You must be deliberate when consciously creating change and do it on Purpose. There is no mistake or accident that has caused the changes you are experiencing, no. You are creating every step of the way.

You may ask: When do I take that next step to create change in my life?
Let me propose YOU ALREADY KNOW! If you've been beaten down by negative experiences and they are still fresh- and you are still crying, and mourning for yourself, then maybe it's too soon. On the other hand, if you have been crying and mourning for years and find yourself emotionally drained- chances are, IT'S TIME to change the recording playing on your internal 'drive'. After all, the internal recordings (the words; affirmations and thoughts we entertain create the roadmap for our lives to follow. It's not always easy to turn the tide, but it is damn empowering once you begin.

FEAR is a tricky 'teacher'. It befriends us when we are down and lost and lonely and feeling worthless. Yes, it can be quite a nice rest-place upon the journey of life. It can be a safe place to idle until we remember we are warriors, and resume our most powerful strengths.

Change can happen when we let go of the past.

It can be challenging to keep a positive mind set on a daily basis, especially if past traumatic experiences haunt you and influence the way you live your life now. Only when you are truly ready to change from deep within, and let go, can change do it's work; and that is- change stuff.

I'm gonna say this three times, with a slight variation each round.- Work with me! Read it out loud and see if it clicks.

Mental
The present moment is where life is happening. Not the past, or future - but Now.
The quality of awareness I give to what I think has the potential to keep me bound to the past, or liberate me into the ever-expanding Now.

Physical
The present moment is where life is happening. Not the past, or future - but Now.
The quality of awareness I give to my body has the potential to keep me bound to the past, or liberate me into the ever-expanding Now.

Emotional
The present moment is where life is happening. Not the past, or future - but Now.
The quality of awareness I give to my emotional triggers and patterns, has the potential to keep me bound to the past, or liberate me into the ever-expanding Now.

If you are not experiencing the results you want in life, change the way you do things. Change the way you talk about things, and change the way you think about things.

For example; Every time you see, or think about the ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend that mistreated you- feelings of shame, betrayal and hurt arise. This affects you in the Now. You feel you can no longer trust anyone, especially not a romantic partner. You know you want to be free of those emotional responses. You are stronger and ready to explore how to be a master of your time and space. Make it so by speaking and thinking it into being. Your thoughts and words will build a bridge whereby you can cross into a new feeling reality. You can begin to feel your positive, love filled words and thoughts as truth, after all- isn't that how it/life happens? You think and say things and they come true.  Feeling is the holder of the now.

Take Charge of Your Vision- Create the List

Change the way you do things.
List five simple things you can do to create more positivity and love in your life.
For example; Saying Thank You more often, like when you get a coffee , or when someone pays you a compliment.

Change the way you talk about things.
List the things you talk about and how you can do so in a more positive manner.
If part of your 'inner work' is talking about being hurt in the past, add a positive twist to it.
For example; "Even though 'Ricky' hurt me in the past, I love myself and allow my past to be healed. I let go of being hurt by it.

Change the way you think about things.
List the top five 'negative', or limiting thoughts you have about your self or life. 'Flip the script' and write your thoughts in a changed manner. Transform them into positives.
For example; "Women/Men won't be attracted to me because I drive a beat up car." Changes to  "The women/men I attract into my life, like me genuinely- for who I am , not because of the car I drive."

Ask; What emotional responses do I want to change and let go of?
List five things you are ready to let go of. Next write a 'flip the script' sentence for each.
For example-" I let go of crying every time I see my ex-boyfriend. I no longer cry when I see my ex-boyfriend." "I let go of feeling betrayed by my ex-boyfriend. I trust in love."

Get your journal- Write out the following questions and answer them honestly, with as much or as little description as you like.

Lets put a spin on the opening quote to this blog post.

"What are your results?" Ask-

Am I happy with my experience of life?
Is life a true reflection of what I want mine to be like?
Am I getting the results I expect?

"See the patterns that don't serve."

Do I entertain patterns of limited thinking that have been the same for years?
Do I wish to change the way I respond to life mentally, physically and emotionally?

"Be disciplined and get control of your mind."

You are a warrior.
Be disciplined like one.
Have integrity in how you speak over your life. Your words control your mind and co-create your life.

Do my words and thoughts uplift me, and surround me in positivity?

Do my words and thoughts build bridges that can lead me to feeling empowered and happy?
Do the words I speak keep me bound to past hurt, or cause emotional imbalance?
Am I ready to Do something about it?

Master your mind by getting control of your mind. Have integrity in how you speak over your life. Be a warrior and pay attention to what you give your attention to- in word and thought.

My mind affects the emotional state of my being.- True or false for you?

My emotional state drives how I react to life overall. True or false for you?

"Love yourself and don't beat yourself up."

Love is a most potent medicine. As we open our hearts to love and self love, we may get bruised or fall into 'past' habits, patterns or reactions- or simply feel resistance. It's okay, don't beat yourself up over it. Be gentle. Lighten up- take a breath or three.

Daily Work-
Don't be hard on yourself
Don't blame yourself for what has happened in the past
Notice how you keep past hurts alive by talking about them, and flip the script in word and thought.
You are different now, you have gotten over it- you are a survivor, let yourself raise up in victory!
Speak positivity and change into your life. You want it- let it be so, Now!
